Violet Hopkins
Fauna
April 16, 2004

Golinko Kordansky Gallery is pleased to announce Fauna, an exhibition of ink on paper paintings by Violet Hopkins. The opening reception will be on Friday, April 16th from 6 to 9PM.

In the series Fauna, the compositions consist of sprawling ink stains that bleed into naturalistically rendered environments. Located within the natural habitat are camouflaged animals. In one piece, craggy iguanas fade into the rocks they sit on. In another, an owl's wings mimic the ripples of nearby bark. The rich ink palettes are forms that flow borderlessly into the representational surroundings. They serve as a chromatic key to the wildlife imagery, depicting each color as its own element. The pieces appear abstract from a distance, but reveal detailed renderings of hidden creatures upon closer inspection. An openness created by negative space adds to the atmospheric quality of the work.
