Nicolau Vergueiro
Objeto Sim Objeto Não
January 9 - February 21, 2004

Golinko Kordansky Gallery is pleased to announce Objeto Sim Objeto Não (Object Yes Object No), an exhibition by Nicolau Vergueiro. The opening reception will be on Friday January 9th from 6 to 9PM. The artist will talk at the gallery on Saturday, February 14th at 3PM.

Nicolau Vergueiro is a Brazilian artist that lives and works in Los Angeles. In his first solo exhibition, Vergueiro presents new sculptures and drawings made from a wide range of materials including colorful flocked fabrics, felt, mirror, glass, beans, vinyl and other plastics. The works in this exhibition playfully sit on the floor and hang amongst tiled ink on vinyl and colored pencil drawings.

Like the Brazilian Tropicalismo movement of the late 60s and early 70s, which composed a critical and more political revision of America’s Psychedelic movement, Vergueiro blends the aesthetics of this subculture with his biographical experiences and memories from Brazil and the U.S. Combining pop and folklore, Vergueiro draws from the iconography of five Brazilian musicians: Gal Costa, Baby Consuelo, Maria Bethania, Rita Lee and Caetano Veloso. Vergueiro pays homage to these artists, celebrating their influence on his identity. Eleven new pencil on paper drawings conflate Brazilian lyrics with American Punk, Disco, and other LP art. The ink on vinyl drawings, wrapped around mirror and tile, are loosely edited monochromatic versions of Vergueiro’s favorite record covers. The personal tattoo like images float on the surface of the vinyl.
