Markus Amm asks elementary questions of painting: How does the primer change the image carrier? How does a spatial illusion arise with the simplest means? What can a painted line do in contrast to a fugue between two canvases that looks like a line? Amm repeatedly applies layers of chalk on a canvas until every trace of the textile background disappears. On another occasion, he places delicate lines on a barely primed canvas and thus places the material carrier in the center of perception. He also experimented with other image carriers: For years, this has resulted in photograms that emerge from direct exposure. His minimalist language of form borrowed from constructivism and questioned positions of the avant-garde.
